PGD Consultation

We met with Dr. Hershlag today who explained to us the whole PGD process. After we go through the IVF cycle where they stimulate egg production and actually retrieve the eggs, he will use a procedure called ICSI (putting one sperm in each egg, manually) and fertilize each mature egg that is retrieved. Once the eggs are fertilized, they will be placed in an incubator for three days.

On the third day, the embryo should be approximately 8 cells - here, Dr. Hershlag will remove one cell from each embryo and send that cell to the Lab in Detroit for genetic testing. Meanwhile, the embryos will be placed back into the incubator until the fifth day, where the best ones will be transferred into me (they will most liekly transfer two embryos and if there any left, they will freeze those).

You need a lot more eggs when you're doing PGD because you "lose" a lot to the testing and to the HPP disease. So the idea for me is to get as many good, mature eggs as possible to send for testing. Now we have to focus on making an appointment with the genetics doctor so i can get my DNA tested!
